Stoves Oven Door Restoration
Ovens subjected to their use, are of course, covered in grease! And so, before we could take the door faces back to our work space, they had a short detour back to the house. We gave them a good hot bath, mixed with some degreasing agents, leaving them to soak overnight.
The industrial cleaning agents we used must have been the final straw for whatever grip the old paint had left in it. By the morning we were left with a job a little bigger than we had prepared for.
Time had started to wrap its hands around this oven, corrosion and rust was setting in. This had eaten away at the metal, causing the previous finish to bubble and flake away in certain spots.
However this wasn’t realised until later.
Crikey, this was new territory for us! Having never restored corroded metal previously we were uncertain whether our usual coating would be enough to sustain a long lasting finish.
Although we did previously speculate, to our delight we confirmed many anti-rust paints are enamel based, as is our 2k Plastigrip.
For a coating used in industrial engineering projects, it wouldn’t have made sense for it to not have anti rust properties.
This called for a bit more than the light sanding as originally planned. We fired up the electric sander and attached some 80 grit pads.
Sanding away for a good couple of hours, we removed all the troublesome parts. Taking them back to bare metal. We made sure they all blended into the healthy, stubborn paint.
After getting all the rust spots Looking like this left hand side. We then moved up to higher grit sanding pads leaving them all smooth to touch.
After a quick dust down, blowing away all remaining particles with compressed air, we were ready for the final coat application. Using an acrylic enamel 2k coating mixed to RAL 9016, “Traffic White” - satin finish.
You can see in these couple of photos we took while the paint was still wet, we achieved a nice smooth finish.
Needless to say, it was rather satisfying to see this quality of finish. Especially considering the new realms we ventured into on this project
We repeated the above process for the handles which were being coated in a Matt black finish to try and blend them, some what, with the black stove top.
And here it is, the final outcome. A huge improvement from the old cream finish, quintessential with decor of the 60’s/70s. It was now a more modern “off white”, we are really happy with how this project turned out.
More importantly Michelle, our customer, was thrilled with the new look of her oven! It even looks like we will be back to do some external work on her property in the not so distant future.
We would like to thank Michelle for the project, it was a pleasure to work with her.
